Worksystems was recently featured on a national webinar to discuss our approach to equity and workforce development in the construction field. John Gardner, Director of Business Services, outlined our workforce development strategies and initiatives to address employment inequities in the industry including:
- our efforts to diversify the workforce through our work with Construction Apprenticeship and Workforce Solutions (CAWS);
- our partnership with Clean Energy Works Oregon to provide on-the-job training resources for contractors and tuition support for eligible job seekers interested in entering the home performance field; and
- helping to craft the Community Benefit Agreement contracting model recently adopted by the City of Portland whereby workforce diversity contracting goals are established on City funded construction projects.
The webinar was hosted by the National Network of Sector Partners (NNSP), an organization dedicated to promoting and increasing support for regional, industry-focused approaches to workforce and economic development that improve employment opportunities and strengthen sectors. Participants learned about the pervasive and persistent problem of disparities in employment and earnings by race and ethnicity and how a sector-based approach such as ours can prove to be an effective solution.
